MIT Jumps to #9 Ranking in D3Hoops.com Poll

The MIT Basketball team moved up to the #9 spot in this week's D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll. This is the second-highest ranking ever by the program, after being voted the 8th best team in the country during the 2009-2010 season. The entire Top 25 list: http://d3hoops.com/top25/men/2011-12/week1

Also voted to the Top 25 was NEWMAC rival WPI (#18), as well as fellow Northeast Region programs Williams (#7), Amherst (#3), and Middlebury (#2).

MIT Athletic Program Ranked 7th in Nation

MIT is currently ranked 7th out of all Division III programs after the Fall season for the Learfield Sports Director's Cup, which measures the overall success of collegiate athletic programs. Five of the top seven athletic programs are located in the Northeast. An updated set of rankings will be released December 8th.

#10 MIT Wins 5th Straight

The nationally ranked #10 MIT Engineers topped Suffolk University 81-59 this evening in Rockwell Cage to continue their perfect 5-0 season. Tech's defensive pressure led to 14 steals while offensively the reigning NEWMAC Champions shot a sizzling 71% from inside the arc.

Two-time All-Conference selection Mitchell Kates led the show with 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Jamie Karraker, one of the nation's best three-point shooters, connected on four treys to reach 16 points on the night.

Last year's All-Region big-man Will Tashman registered his third double-double in a row, tallying 14 points and 13 rebounds along with a game-high 4 assists, while All-American Noel Hollingsworth added 10 points in just 19 minutes of action.

MIT travels across the Charles River to face Emerson College on Tuesday at 7pm. Emerson is coached by former Boston College and Ohio State head coach Jim O'Brien.

MIT takes on cross-town Division I Harvard in preseason tune-up. Harvard would go on to beat #20 Florida State University two weeks later.

Sloan Undergraduate Program Ranked 9th in Nation

Bloomberg Businessweek recently announced its Best Undergraduate Business Schools of 2011, and MIT's Sloan was awarded as the 9th best in the country.

Despite the tough economic times, 90% of Sloan undergrads received job placements last year, with a median starting salary of $65,000.

#10 MIT Handles Emmanuel 79-46

The MIT Basketball team, ranked as the 10th best team in the nation out of over 400 teams in Division III, took care of business against Emmanuel College tonight with a 79-46 win. Tech dished out an incredible 26 assists on 31 makes, held the Saints to just 26% shooting, and out-rebounded their opponents by 17.

Junior Jamie Karraker, one of the best three-point shooters in the nation last season, scorched the nets early on, nailing five trifectas in just 3 minutes. Karraker, who is averaging almost four three-pointers a game at 44%, went on to hit seven three's and led all scorers with 23 points.

Senior Billy Bender came off a career-night versus RPI to fill the stat-sheet again with 21 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals, while All-Region big-man Will Tashman notched his second double-double in a row with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Former Regional Rookie of the Year Mitchell Kates led the efficient offense again, dishing out 8 assists on the night, while All-American Noel Holllingsworth, drawing double and triple teams that left other teammates open, grabbed 9 caroms off the glass.

The Engineers take Thursday off for Thanksgiving, then meet Suffolk University at home on Saturday at 2pm.

Hollingsworth Garners Conference Player of the Week Honors

Preseason 1st-Team All-American Noel Hollingsworth earned the NEWMAC's first Player of the Week award this season after a stellar opening to his junior campaign (Hollingsworth is a senior academically but a junior eligibility wise).  The former Conference Player of the Year averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds over the last week, as the #10 Engineers went undefeated in their three games.

The 6'9" center from Utah is an Electrical Engineering and Computer Science major at MIT, and plans on staying another season to earn his master's and use his final year of eligibility.

#10 MIT Wins "Battle of the Engineers"

The #10 MIT Engineers dominated visiting RPI Engineers 104-75 this afternoon in Rockwell Cage. After a slow start, Tech would go on to score their most points in a game in 20 years. RPI, a 17-8 team last season, pressured MIT throughout the game, but couldn't keep up with Tech's 60 points inside the paint.

MIT had three players score over twenty points, including All-American Noel Hollingsworth with 28 points and 15 rebounds on 12-of-14 shooting. Senior Billy Bender tied a career-high of 24 points, along with 5 rebounds and 5 assists, and All-Region performer Will Tashman dropped in 23 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.

Mitchell Kates led the way at point again dishing out 9 assists with 3 steals, and sharp-shooter Jamie Karraker netted 12 points in just 18 minutes.  MIT out-rebounded RPI by 22 as they move to 3-0 on the season.
