MIT Lands Three on ECAC All-Star Teams

The MIT Basketball squad landed three student-athletes out of the ten possible spots for the ECAC New England All-Star 1st and 2nd Teams. 6'9" Noel Hollingsworth and All-American Mitchell Kates earned 1st-Team Honors, while 6'8" big-man Will Tashman earned a spot on the 2nd Team. All three starters will return for the 2012-2013 season.

Statistically Speaking: Record Breaking Season

The 2011-12 MIT Basketball Team has certainly established itself as arguably one of the most prolific MIT squads of all time.  The team's most important accomplishments are undoubtedly the first ever MIT sweep of the NEWMAC regular and post season championships and first ever trip to the NCAA Division III Final Four.  However, this year's team has broken many other marks, both collectively and individually.  We break them down below:

MIT Assistant Coach Bill Johnson Travels to Malaysia with Australian Team

2nd-year Assistant Coach Bill Johnson '10 is currently participating in the Sultan Azlan Shah International Basketball Tournament in Malaysia with a semi-professional team from Australia, the Gold Coast Authentic All-Stars. The 6'8" swingman is starting for the club, and scored 12 points in 16 minutes in their opening round win over the Singapore National "B" Team.

Johnson, a 1,000-point scorer and member of the memorable '08-'09 MIT squad, recently had professional stints in Costa Rica and Iceland. He is pursuing a similar endeavor in Australia during MIT's offseason.

MIT Falls to UW-Whitewater in Final Four, Ends Historic Season

The #3 MIT Engineers fell to #8 UW-Whitewater 71-56 in the Division III Final Four in Salem, Virginia Friday night. Tech, tied with the Warhawks 26-26 at halftime, couldn't overcome a 7-minute scoreless drought in the second half. 1st-Team All-American Chris Davis led UW-Whitewater with 30 points.

Will Tashman knotted 15 points and 14 rebounds while being named to the 2012 NCAA All-Tournament team. Mitchell Kates scored 12 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while Billy Bender scored 11 points after sitting out the past three games with a fractured orbital. Noel Hollingsworth had 10 points and 3 rebounds in the loss.

Three Engineers highlighted the 2012 D3Hoops.com All-Region awards. Mitchell Kates was named to the All-Region 3rd Team, Noel Hollingsworth All-Region 2nd Team, and Head Coach Larry Anderson was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year. The Northeast region is the largest region in the country with 75 teams.

MIT Downs F&M, Heads to Final Four

The MIT Basketball team defeated host Franklin & Marshall College, 69-54, in the Elite 8 Round on Saturday night to earn a ticket to the Final Four in Salem, Virginia. Tech out-rebounded the Diplomats by 12 and shot a blistering 56% from three in front of a packed house in Lancaster, PA.

Leading the way was point guard Mitchell Kates, putting in a stellar performance of 21 points, 8 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and a block. Sharp-shooter Jamie Karraker lit up the nets again with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from three along with 6 rebounds. All-American Noel Hollingsworth pitched in a near double-double with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while senior Dan Mccue added 8 points and 5 rebounds in his second start of the season. Big-man Will Tashman shut down the Franklin & Marshall's post players, holding the Diplomats to 38% shooting.

Engineers Top Staten Island, Advance to Elite 8

The MIT Engineers shot 53% from the field and 55% from three to defeat the College of Staten Island, 83-67, last night in the NCAA Sweet 16 Round. The Engineers moved to 28-1 in this historic season in front of a crowd of 1,700 at host Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA.

Mitchell Kates dominated the game with 29 points, 5 assists, 4 steals, and 2 rebounds. Jamie Karraker lit up the nets in the first half, hitting all seven of his shots, including 6-of-6 from three, to finish the game with 25 points. All-American Noel Hollingsworth registered 13 points and 8 rebounds, while big-man Will Tashman notched a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Dan Mccue was a machine on the defensive end, keeping Staten Island's guards at bay.

MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference Takes Over Sports World

The biggest and brightest names in the sports world convened on MIT's campus over the weekend to participate in the Sloan School of Management's 6th Annual Sports Analytics Conference.

Speakers this year included Bill Simmons (ESPN), Steve Pagliuca (owner- Boston Celtics), Scott Boras (sports agent with clients such as Alex Rodriguez), and Michael Wilborn (ESPN).

Engineers Advance to Sweet 16

For the first time in program history, the MIT Engineers advanced to the Sweet 16 with a dominating win over Farmingdale State, 83-63, on Saturday in Oneonta, NY. Farmingdale State had beaten MIT in the 2nd Round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, but this time around MIT shot 53% from the field and out-rebounded the Rams (who were 4th in the nation in rebounding) by 10.

Preseason All-American Noel Hollingsworth proved why he is one of the best centers in the country, dropping a career-high 37 points in the win.  Fellow big-man Will Tashman knotted 16 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists, but more importantly shut down 7-foot center A.J. Matthews, who had 33 points and 19 rebounds the night before (Tashman held him to 11 points and 5 rebounds). Matthews' Highlight Video:


Point Guard Mitchell Kates had 11 points and 11 assists in the win, while Jamie Karraker connected on 4 three's to reach 99 three-pointers on the season, an MIT record. Dan Mccue provided stifling defense to shut down Farmingdale's athletic wings.

MIT, now 27-1, travels to Lancaster, PA to face the College of Staten Island in the Sweet 16. Tip-off is set for Friday at 5:30pm at Franklin and Marshall College.

Tech Takes Down Skidmore in 1st Round of NCAA Tourney

The MIT Basketball squad defeated Skidmore College tonight, 62-55, in the 1st Round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Tournament. Hosted by Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, MIT's sixth NCAA Tournament game ever saw the Engineers out-rebound Skidmore 40-23.

1st Team All-Conference point guard Mitchell Kates dominated the game with 24 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals. Preseason All-American Noel Hollingsworth netted 17 points and 6 rebounds, while fellow 1st Team All-Conference selection Will Tashman had 12 points and 15 rebounds for the double-double.

MIT takes on Farmingdale State tomorrow at 7:00PM in the 2nd Round of the NCAA Tournament. This will be a rematch of the 2008-2009 NCAA Tournament, when MIT lost to Farmingdale State in the 2nd Round in MIT's first NCAA Tournament in program history.
