Team, Alumni, and Fans Celebrate MIT Season

On April 21, the MIT Basketball team, alumni, family, friends, and fans joined together to celebrate another historic season at the annual MIT Basketball Banquet. Held at the MIT Faculty Club overlooking the Charles River, the keynote speaker this year was Mark Attanasio, owner of the Milwaukee Brewers. Coaches and players reflected on the past year, and awards were given to the team, including their NCAA Semifinalist trophies.

Head Coach Larry Anderson Earns National Man of the Year Award

Head Coach Larry Anderson, coming off the best season in MIT history with a 29-2 record and trip to the Final Four, has earned the Man of the Year award presented by CollegeInsider.com. The award was presented to Anderson in New Orleans, the site of this year's Division I Final Four. Anderson, in his 17th season, was also a finalist for the National Coach of the Year after earning both Conference Coach of the Year and Northeast Region Coach of the Year accolades.

MIT Lands Three on ECAC All-Star Teams

The MIT Basketball squad landed three student-athletes out of the ten possible spots for the ECAC New England All-Star 1st and 2nd Teams. 6'9" Noel Hollingsworth and All-American Mitchell Kates earned 1st-Team Honors, while 6'8" big-man Will Tashman earned a spot on the 2nd Team. All three starters will return for the 2012-2013 season.

Anderson, Kates, Hollingsworth earn D3Hoops All-Region Honors



Three Engineers highlighted the 2012 D3Hoops.com All-Region awards. Mitchell Kates was named to the All-Region 3rd Team, Noel Hollingsworth All-Region 2nd Team, and Head Coach Larry Anderson was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year. The Northeast region is the largest region in the country with 75 teams.

Three Land Spot on All-Conference 1st Team; Anderson Coach of the Year

Juniors Noel Hollingsworth, Will Tashman, and Mitchell Kates have all been named to this year's NEWMAC All-Conference 1st Team. This is the first time in NEWMAC history that three players of the same school earned All-Conference 1st Team honors.

Head Coach Larry Anderson was awarded Coach of the Year once again, his third honor in seven years.

Hollingsworth, Karraker Academic All-Americans


Noel Hollingsworth and Jamie Karraker, who both have junior eligibility, have both earned a spot on this year's CoSIDA Academic All-American Second Team. 10 players in all of Division III (over 5,000 student-athletes) compose the two teams, and the NEWMAC provided three of them (Senior Matt Carr of WPI also earned the honor).

Both Hollingsworth and Karraker will stay at MIT for graduate school, and use their final year of eligibility.

MIT continues to lead all other Division III institutions in number of Academic All-Americans produced.

Hollingsworth, Karraker Honored with Academic All-District Award

Hollingsworth Earns 3rd Player of the Week Honor

Junior Noel Hollingsworth earned his third, and MIT's sixth, NEWMAC Player of the Week award for his dominating performances last week. The 6'9" All-American averaged 18.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks while shooting a commanding 61% from the field.

Hollingsworth is 12 points shy of the 1,000-point mark, a feat that could be reached this Wednesday at Wheaton along with Jamie Karraker (who is 13 points away from the milestone).

Tashman Earns Player of the Week



6'8" Junior Will Tashman earned Conference Player of the Week for his dominating performances last week versus Coast Guard and Babson. The reigning NEWMAC Tournament MVP and D3Hoops.com Northeast All-Region performer averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds over the two games.

Tashman hails from Atherton, California and is majoring in Materials Science & Engineering and minoring in Physics. The Jewish First-Team All-American spent last summer interning at Lunera Lighting, helping them develop state-of-the-art LED fixtures. 

MIT players have now received five out of the seven Player of the Week awards.

Karraker Nets 2nd POTW Award




Junior Jamie Karraker earned his second Conference Player of the Week award this week for his stellar performances against Springfield College and Wheaton College to open NEWMAC play. Karraker averaged 17.5 points with 11 three-pointers in the two games.

The sharp-shooter from West Virginia is tops in the nation in three-point field goals made, and has already broken two three-point records at MIT.

Karraker Earns COOP Student-Athlete of the Week

After an historic last couple of weeks on the court, Junior Jamie Karraker earned the MIT COOP's Athlete of the Week award. Jamie netted a record 9 three-pointers in the win vs. UMass-Boston, and became MIT's all-time leading three-point shooter in the win over Wheelock.

Karraker Earns POW




Sharp shooter Jamie Karraker was honored for his career performances last week by earning NEWMAC Player of the Week. MIT has now owned the award for three of the four weeks. Karraker, a senior with another year of eligibility left, shot the lights out for the undefeated Engineers, connecting on 17 three-pointers in the three games, while posting a career-high of 27 points versus UMass-Boston, and then topping that with 28 points against Salem State. Karraker is averaging 15.7 points per game this year while shooting a red-hot 44.4% from three, and is seven three-pointers away from becoming MIT's all-time three-point leader.

Karraker is a computer science whiz who spent last summer in California interning with Facebook and training with teammate Will Tashman and Stanford players.

Hollingsworth Named POW Again



All-American Noel Hollingsworth earned his second Conference Player of the Week honors out of the three that have been awarded this season. The 6'9" Salt Lake City native averaged 22.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game this week while shooting 61.7% from the field. He has led the Engineers to a perfect 8-0 record and a #9 national ranking.

Hollingsworth Garners Conference Player of the Week Honors

Preseason 1st-Team All-American Noel Hollingsworth earned the NEWMAC's first Player of the Week award this season after a stellar opening to his junior campaign (Hollingsworth is a senior academically but a junior eligibility wise).  The former Conference Player of the Year averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds over the last week, as the #10 Engineers went undefeated in their three games.

The 6'9" center from Utah is an Electrical Engineering and Computer Science major at MIT, and plans on staying another season to earn his master's and use his final year of eligibility.

Tashman, Kates Named to All-Conference Squads

The NEWMAC all-conference selections were announced today and MIT earned a pair of awards. Sophomore forward Will Tashman was named 1st Team All-NEWMAC, after averaging 13.8 ppg and a league-best 8.9 rpg. Classmate Mitchell Kates was named to the 2nd team, averaging 15.3 ppg, 5.0 apg, 2.2 spg, and a league-best 1.6 A/TO ratio.

Tashman Named NEWMAC Player of the Week

Hollingsworth Named 1st Team Preseason All-American by D3Hoops.com

Noel Hollingsworth was named a 1st Team Preseason All-American by D3Hoops.com today. This marks the second preseason All-American award Hollingsworth has received, as he was previously named 2nd Team All-American by The Sporting News. The full list can be found here.
